IB Program to Be Discontinued 

At the November 2023 Program Review Committee meeting and Regular Board Meeting, school board administration provided further background information related to the discontinuation of the International Baccalaureate, effective June 2027.

The June 2027 effective date will allow all current Grade 9 students to complete the program, but no new students will be admitted to the program. IB is currently offered at Cobourg Collegiate Institute in Cobourg, and Kenner Collegiate Vocational Institute in Peterborough.

The decision to discontinue the program is based on a number of key considerations, including equity of access, costs to students, retention and graduation rates, and budget considerations.

What is the IB Diploma Program?

The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program is designed for highly motivated secondary students who want an internationally recognized, rigorous, liberal education. IB prepares students exceptionally well for university study in all disciplines.

IB is a two-year course of study for students aged 16-19 (Grades 11 and 12). The broad curriculum includes the study of languages, a social science, an experimental science, math, and an art or second subject from another curriculum area.

Universities worldwide- including Ontario and the rest of Canada- accept the IB Diploma.
