Our Community Growing Together
Students at Port Hope High School were excited to revive their community garden this year! With support and donations from the local Port Hope community, the school’s garden project first began in 2019. After a temporary pause due to the pandemic, students and staff were thrilled to pick up where they left off this spring. Students from many different grades and classes took part in the community garden project, sharing their talents and skills.Â
Tech, Environmental Science, Woodworking, and Manufacturing students worked together to build wild bee boxes behind the garden and install piping for the irrigation system. Students from French Immersion, Science, Learning and Life Skills and Co-op helped with watering and planting flowers and vegetables. Staff assisted with rototilling, watering, weeding, harvesting and bringing fertilizer from home.Â
The community garden is currently growing tomatoes, pumpkins and squash, which will be shared with the greater community. The tomatoes will be available to members of the Port Hope community over the summer, with extra ones taken to local food banks and senior drop-off centers.
"Thank you to the whole community for coming together to make good things grow," says Port Hope High School teacher, Krista Coughler.Â
