Steve Russell

Trustee for the City of Peterborough

Steve Russell is a strong believer in the transformational power of the arts - to engage our hearts and minds, to fight against racism and inequities of all kinds, and to make positive changes that support students in their stewardship of the planet.

About Steve Russell

Steve is passionate about public education, he spent many years as a secondary school teacher before becoming Trustee after his retirement. He was a former Arts Consultant for KPRDSB and Former President of the Council of Ontario Drama and Dance Educators (CODE). Throughout his career as a secondary teacher and arts consultant, Steve worked with students and staff to develop authentic and meaningful learning experiences in the arts. Steve has seen first-hand the transformational power of the arts to affect change, and continues to advocate for the importance of the arts in KPR schools. Participation in the arts can improve student engagement, social and emotional connections and support the development of essential twenty-first century learning skills, such as creativity, critical thinking and problem solving.

Steve is the former President of the Peterborough Theatre Guild as well as an actor and director. He is also the author of a book on assessment in the dramatic arts and a part-time Education instructor at Trent University. Steve is a grandfather of two children - his work as a Trustee supports his continued belief in education's ability to reduce barriers and improve access to opportunities for all.
