Kaawaate East City Public School

January 9, 2024

Dear Kaawaate East City Public School Families,

As we shared in the fall, Kaawaate East City PS is forecasted to be at 125% of existing capacity for September 2024, with 847 expected students in the school, and capacity for only 675 students. These space challenges are expected to continue over the next 10 years.

This message provides an update on the accommodation planning process. In a November meeting at the school, we reviewed possible strategies to manage immediate enrolment pressures at Kaawaate ECPS for next school year. A copy of this presentation is below.

As the next steps in this process, school board administration is bringing a report with the following recommended changes to the Board’s Resource Committee meeting for consideration on January 10:

Beginning in September 2024, Kaawaate East City PS would change from a Junior Kindergarten (JK) – Grade 8 dual track school, to a JK – Grade 6 dual-track school, and Grades 7-8 English stream. Grade 7-8 French Immersion students from Kaawaate East City PS will attend Adam Scott Intermediate School effective September 2024.

The Board’s Resource Committee will consider this recommendation on January 10 before a final decision on this matter is made by the Board of Trustees at the January 23, 2024 Board meeting.

Administration’s report, including school community feedback captured as part of our consultations, an updated Questions and Answers document, and other related information is available below.

We want to extend our thanks and appreciation to everyone who participated in our meeting in November at the school and through the online ThoughtExchange. We particularly appreciate the feedback provided by current French Immersion families and acknowledge the impacts to these students as part of these proposed changes.

We are recommending this move due to the immediate and urgent space shortage at Kaawaate East City PS. Should it be approved by the Board, we will commit to a robust transition plan for students impacted by this decision. Administration believes that this recommendation will enhance the educational experience of the students impacted by providing them with access to a well-established French Immersion program in an intermediate school setting that will also offer a broad range of extra-curricular experiences to complement their learning experience.

We appreciate your interest in helping us make the best possible choices for the students we serve and thank you for your continued support of our school communities.
